Our approach is based upon the PainCare Aware Program designed by Neil Pearson, which combines graded movement, nervous system regulation and embodied education. Our entire staff, from the front desk to the clinicians and the class teachers have been through this training so that we have a common language and unified approach. We also offer the Reframe Chronic Pain neuroscience education series, designed by Andrea Kruger. Dr. Davina Kraubner, our pain-specialist and founder of the MyoPain Clinic, supports the clinical teams with various tools and technologies in addition to her expert opinion. Since mental health challenges and addiction are frequently comorbidities of pain, we have numerous staff members with additional training and experience in trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, nervous system dysregulation, various psychotherapies and addiction treatments, and several of our team members also work in a local addictions facility.

We understand how difficult it can be for clients in rural and remote communities to access the care they need, so most of our clinicians are trained and open to offering their expertise via telehealth. We can mail out any supplies needed and follow up each week via videoconferencing, which allows us to do education sessions, exercise therapies and coaching online to support progress and advance activities week to week.

Research, Technology & Innovation
As a result of our affiliation with HealthTech Connex and the Brainnovation Network, our team members are sometimes linked into clinical research with the Centre for Neurology Studies, which has research partnerships with prestigious academic institutions like Mayo Clinic and several other academic and commercial institutions. We gain access to emerging technologies and treatment approaches through these partnerships. These technologies are ever-changing, as research projects come online, but currently include:
-
NeuroCatch® is designed for healthcare practitioners to measure the cognitive brain function of their clients through a type of EEG called evoked potentials. It also supports neuro-researchers who require an easy-to-use and convenient cognitive brain function measurement system. The results of the scan provide healthcare practitioners with objective measurements of specific brain functions: Auditory sensation; Basic attention; Cognitive processing. These measurements can be used to help their clients identify areas for improvement, customize their treatment plan or journey to recovery, and understand how their brain function is today. Many clinical conditions create ERP patterns or biomarkers, and this technology can assist in monitoring whether these change in response to treatment.

Myndlift separates electrical signals generated in the brain into distinct brainwaves that may be associated with a particular mental state. For example, alpha brainwaves usually signify a relaxed state and high beta waves may represent a stressed state. This neurofeed device works by playing specialized games or watching videos that reward you when you are able to control your brainwaves. For example, if you want to increase your relaxed concentration and reduce your racing thoughts, you can play a game that will reward you when you increase your alpha waves and decrease your high beta waves, eliciting a more calm and relaxed state. This real-time monitoring and rewarding is known as operant conditioning. Over multiple sessions you become more skilled at consciously managing your brainwaves and creating those desired states of being, which can be very helpful with system management.

Shiftwave Chair is a breakthrough Nervous System Training Technology that applies pulsed pressure waves to the body, paired with auditory experiences (ie. meditation, breathwork, music) while monitoring various vitals including heart rate, heart rate variability and respiratory rate.
Certain protocols are very effective at upregulating the nervous system, causing users to feel more alert, awake, motivated and/or energized.
Typically we use these protocols with individuals who feel fatigued, depressed or foggy, or to prime for cognitive or physical exercise. Other protocols are effective at downregulating the nervous system, causing users to experience deep relaxation and inducing/mimicking aspects of sleep states. We use these protocols for individuals with sleep deprivation who feel“wired but tired”, experience high anxiety, high muscle tone, painful muscle tension or even tremors. Many of our users report feeling calmer, more relaxed and less pain-sensitive afterward. Using the chair to gradually entrain the nervous system and move through various states in a safe environment has been a beneficial element of our programming.

BEMER PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) offers a non-medication, non-surgical approach for enhancing overall health. PEMF has been shown in studies to improve microcirculation and enhance cellular metabolism, contributing to overall tissue health and healing. We often find it helpful with wound healing.

The clinic uses several virtual reality rehabilitation tools including a pain education program, several mobility programs, and various tools to calm the nervous system and elicit state changes.
The VR Pain Program, for example, is very helpful for clients who struggle with traditional education delivery methods because they have difficulty sitting or concentrating. The VR offers them an embodied experience where they can “feel” the principles being taught (ie. the nervous system kicking in when there is danger, like the image of a burning fire; or calming down when they step away from a steep cliffside onto solid ground). Our clients often experience “aha’ moments associated with this type of teaching, that allows them to apply the principles more fully in real life.

SleepHub® uses neuroscience and exclusive sound technology.Through two finely tuned speakers, SleepHub® plays psychoacoustic sounds with sinusoidal waveforms, in stereo. The sounds are formed of low frequency pure tones, called Sleep Sounds. Sleep Sounds emulate the brain activity which occurs during optimal sleep cycles, heard through the auditory pathways and received by our brain during sleep. By selecting one of the three sleep modes or the nap mode, the user is guided through falling asleep, following natural sleep cycles in the correct order, until the sleep programme ends and a state of awakening happens at the right time in the sleep cycle.
We also offer a Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for insomnia program which pairs well with this technology as many of our clients have significant sleep issues.
-
The Portable Neurostimulation System (PoNS) is a breakthrough technology that stimulates neuroplastic change (improved firing and re-wiring) in the part of the brain that controls coordinated movement and balance (PoNs, Medulla, Cerebellum).
Our 14 week Health Canada approved protocol is aimed primarily at improving gait and balance in conditions such as stroke, concussion/TBI, and Multiple Sclerosis, although clients have reported many other associated benefits (a recent pilot project demonstrated improvements in mental health, cognition, headaches, dizziness and vestibular problems, etc).
